Homeowners Insurance in Terre Haute
Your home is usually the biggest thing you own. We quote it across several carriers, set limits on what it would actually cost to rebuild, and point out the gaps before a claim finds them for you.
What Homeowners Insurance Covers
Every carrier's policy wording differs a little. This is how homeowners coverage typically works, and where people most often get surprised at claim time.
Typically covered
The core protections in most policies.
- DwellingRepairs or rebuilds the house itself after fire, wind, hail, lightning, and other covered damage. The limit should match rebuilding cost, not what the house would sell for.
- Other structuresDetached garages, sheds, fences, and pole barns. Usually 10% of the dwelling limit by default, which often falls short for a large outbuilding.
- Personal propertyFurniture, clothing, electronics, tools, and appliances, at home or away from it. Ask for replacement-cost contents so you are not paid a depreciated value.
- Loss of usePays for a hotel or rental and extra living costs while a covered loss makes your home unlivable.
- Personal liabilityCovers you if someone is hurt on your property or you accidentally damage someone else's property, including legal defense costs.
- Medical payments to othersPays small medical bills for guests hurt at your home, regardless of fault, often heading off a larger liability claim.
Usually not covered
The gaps worth asking about before you need them.
- Flood and rising waterNo standard homeowners policy covers flooding. That needs a separate flood policy, and most have a 30-day waiting period.
- Sewer and drain backupExcluded unless you add a water backup endorsement. It is inexpensive and one of the most common basement claims we see.
- Earth movementEarthquake and sinkhole damage are typically excluded and can be added by endorsement where available.
- Wear, tear, and maintenanceInsurance covers sudden accidents, not a roof that wore out or a slow leak that went unrepaired.
- High-value items above sublimitsJewelry, firearms, collectibles, and similar items carry low per-category caps unless you schedule them separately.

Homeowners Coverage in the Wabash Valley
A lot of Terre Haute housing predates 1950, and carriers treat older wiring, plumbing, and roofs very differently. Some decline outright; others price it fairly. Knowing which is which is most of what an independent agent does for you here.
