Motorcycle Insurance for Indiana Riders

Indiana requires liability on every registered motorcycle. But the state minimum does nothing for your own bike, your gear, or your medical bills. We build rider coverage that matches how, and how often, you ride.

The Details

What Motorcycle Insurance Covers

Every carrier's policy wording differs a little. This is how motorcycle coverage typically works, and where people most often get surprised at claim time.

Typically covered

The core protections in most policies.

  • LiabilityInjuries and property damage you cause to others. Required in Indiana at the same 25/50/25 minimums as a car.
  • Collision and comprehensiveDamage to your own bike from accidents, theft, fire, hail, and animal strikes.
  • Uninsured and underinsured motoristCritical for riders, since injuries in a motorcycle crash are often severe and the other driver may carry only minimum limits.
  • Custom parts and equipmentAftermarket pipes, seats, paint, and accessories that standard coverage would value at little or nothing.
  • Riding gearHelmets, jackets, and protective equipment damaged in a covered accident.
  • Roadside and trip interruptionTowing, and help with lodging and meals when a breakdown strands you far from home.

Usually not covered

The gaps worth asking about before you need them.

  • Racing and track daysOrganized racing and track use are typically excluded.
  • Customization above your limitIf you did not add custom equipment coverage, most of what you spent on upgrades is not protected.
  • Passengers, in some casesGuest passenger liability is sometimes optional. Confirm it if you ride two-up.
  • Wear and mechanical failureChains, tires, and engine wear are maintenance, not insurance.

Local Perspective

Motorcycle Coverage in the Wabash Valley

West-central Indiana riding season is short, and a lot of bikes sit from November to March. We look for carriers that price that in, and make sure theft and storage coverage stays active while the bike is parked.

Common Questions

Motorcycle Insurance FAQ

Is motorcycle insurance required in Indiana?
Yes. Registered motorcycles in Indiana need liability coverage at the state minimums of 25/50/25. Collision, comprehensive, and other coverages are optional unless the bike is financed.
Does my auto policy cover my motorcycle?
No. A car policy does not extend to a motorcycle. It needs its own policy, though carrying both with the same carrier can earn a multi-policy discount.
Can I pause coverage over the winter?
Dropping all coverage leaves the bike exposed to theft, fire, and storage damage. A better option is lowering to comprehensive-only or choosing a carrier that adjusts for the riding season.
Are my aftermarket parts covered?
Only up to the custom equipment limit on your policy, which may be small by default. If you have invested in upgrades, raise that limit to match.
